A PatientEnlarged inner labia, called labial hypertrophy, can make sitting, exercising, and wearing tight clothing painful. Labiaplasty, also known as labial reduction surgery, is one way to treat that discomfort. Below, one of our patients tells how it went for her at Advanced Women’s Health Institute in Denver, CO. She saw Dr. Michael L. Moore, a gynecologist (GYN), and shares her story in her own words.

My Labiaplasty Experience

My labia bothered me. Sitting on hard surfaces and wearing tight clothes was a problem. I looked into labiaplasty, $7,000-$9,000. I’m a single mother of two.

Then I saw something about Advanced Women’s Health Institute. I saw a price I could afford, $1,500. I met Dr. Moore. He’s a GYN, not a plastic surgeon. He explained he could do the same kind of surgery with local. The local would sting for several seconds, not minutes. After that I would be numb.

I decided to do it. I have a good pain threshold. I don’t like the dentist numbing me but it’s not terrible. I liked that I could have a light meal a few hours before and drink fluids.

I hated the local, the first one was the worst but then it got better. After that, things seemed fine and it was over. I went home and showered. I was numb for several hours.

Day one post op I took a shower and felt sensitive, but not terrible pain. Standing and walking around was not too bad. Sitting was uncomfortable and I needed to shift position.

Over the next few days post op bleeding stopped. I felt better. I got good news at the one-week visit, no infection and should be happy with the result.

At six weeks everything is almost healed. I’m happy with the result and I saved a lot of money.

What Recovery Looked like for Her

She had local anesthesia, which numbs the area instead of putting you fully to sleep. She went home the same day. On day one she felt sensitive and sitting was uncomfortable. The bleeding stopped over the next few days. At her one-week visit she had no infection, and at six weeks she was almost healed.

Your own healing may look different. Swelling and discomfort are expected during the first one to two weeks, and we ask patients to skip hard exercise, tight clothing, and sexual activity for several weeks. Dr. Moore goes over your activity limits and follow-up care before surgery.

Cost and Insurance

Cost was the first hurdle for this patient, and it can be for you too. Labiaplasty prices vary from one practice to the next, and insurance does not cover the procedure because it carries a cosmetic billing code. Our blog post Labiaplasty Does Not Have to Be Expensive explains how we approach pricing. You can also see which plans we accept for your other visits on our insurance page.
