What is pelvic prolapse
Pelvic prolapse is a result of the female reproductive organs dropping. It can cause various problems including urinary incontinence, pain and problems with hygiene.
What causes pelvic prolapse?
Prolapse is almost always the result of childbirth. The pelvic floor fascia that holds the uterus in place is torn during the birth process as the fetal head passes through the vaginal canal. In some women, these tears are extensive and never heal properly.
What are the symptoms?
One of the main symptoms is urinary incontinence. Incontinence is caused by the lack of proper anatomic support for the bladder. Anatomic stress incontinence may also be associated with a sense of urinary urgency. Another symptom may be the sensation of discomfort when upright as if the uterus was falling out. Some patients may feel or see tissue bulging out of the vaginal opening.
