What are the treatment options for chronic pelvic pain? |
 |
Medicine - Analgesic treatment (antidepressants, NSAIDS,
narcotics, oral contraception, Lupron) can be used. Some of these medications have side effects and long-term
complications. Discussion with your physician will help determine your best medical care.
 |
 |
Nerve blocks - There are specific nerves that intervate the
pelvic region. The pain specialist can perform a trigger nerve block injection. Relief can be acquired for up to 3
months.
 |
 |
Surgical - Depending upon the findings at the time of pain mapping or with
preoperative ultrasound evaluation, there are several surgical options. These
include removal of fibroids, endometriosis and excision of adhesions.
Sometimes a nerve resection procedure can be successful in eliminating and
controlling pain.
-
These operative procedures are performed under a general anesthetic. The
patient may anticipate return to work in approximately 2 weeks.
